Koupal sets school record with 40 points to lead Coyotes to 78-61 win over Augustana Mandy Koupal had a career-best performance to lead South Dakota (14-2, 4-1) to a 78-61 North Central Conference win over Augustana (14-5, 2-3) on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the DakotaDome before 2,187 fans.

Koupal, a junior from Wagner, had a career-high and school record 40 points, along with 15 rebounds, two steals and five 3-pointers. Koupal broke the school record of 38 points set by Kelly Koepp in 2000.

Koupal hit all five of her 3-pointers and recorded an NCC-best eighth double double. She now has 23 career double doubles and has 24 double figure scoring games.

Both Julia Frie, a senior from Byron, MN, and Yankton native Heather Nelson scored 12 points for the Coyotes.

South Dakota, who struggled from 3-point range in a loss on Thursday to SDSU, was torrid from downtown on Saturday. The Coyotes hit 10 of 18 from 3-point range for 55.6 percent. The Coyotes also hit 27 of 56 field goals for 48.2 percent. They were 14 of 18 from the foul line for 77.8 percent.

Augustana, led by 18 points by Laura Hensley, hit 23 of 60 field goals for 38.3 percent. They were just five of 18 from 3-point range for 27.8 percent and 10 of 16 from the foul line.

After Augustana took a 7-5 lead at the 16:07 mark of the first half, the Coyotes took control of the game. Koupal had 5 straight points, including a

3-pointer, to provide USD with a 14-9 lead. USD increased the margin to 20-11 at the 10:44 mark when Nelson hit a jumper and a foul shot. A

jumper and 3-pointer by Frie gave USD a 36-22 lead with 17 seconds left in the half.

At halftime, Koupal had 13 points and eight rebounds as well as an assist and two steals to lead USD to a 36-22 advantage. South Dakota hit 14 of 27

field goals for 51.9 percent, including six of 11 from 3-point range for 54.5 percent. The Coyotes made two of three free throws.

In the opening 20 minutes, Augustana converted nine of 29 field goals for 31 percent, including two of 11 from the 3-point line and two of three from the free throw line.

Augustana was led by Laura Hensley with 7 points while Joanna Nauman had 6 points. USD won the rebound battle in the first half by a 19-15 mark.

South Dakota opened the second half with an 13-4 run to take a 49-28 lead at the 14:39 mark following a basket by Koupal. Augustana crept back

within 13 at the 9:23 mark on a lay-up by Erin Johnson. But, that was as close as the visitors would get on the night.

The Coyotes regained control and moved the lead back to 63-42 with 6:17 to play.
