Local students nominated by Daschle Senator Tom Daschle has announced the students he has nominated for admission to the United States Air Force, Naval, Military and Merchant Marine Academies.
Daschle said that admission to the service academies is highly competitive. Of the applicants, only 10 per academy can be nominated by Daschle to compete for each available vacancy. Students are selected for nomination based on their academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership potential and physical fitness. Daschle said the students were interviewed by an advisory board comprised of South Dakotans with military experience.
"These nominees are among the best and brightest of South Dakota's graduating seniors or recent graduates, and I'm very proud to have such a talented group represent our state," Daschle said.
Thomas Dendinger, son of Bill and Cyndi Dendinger, Vermillion, has been nominated by Daschle for admission to the U.S. Navel Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Military Academy. Dendinger is a senior at Vermillion High School.
Daschle has nominated Jeanette Nygaard, a graduate of VHS, for admission to the U.S. Military Academy. She is the daughter of Eldon and Sherry Nygaard, Vermillion and currently attends South Dakota State University.
