MADD meeting planned Feb. 11 The Vermillion Police Department is sponsoring a meeting to explore the feasibility of chartering a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) chapter for the Vermillion/Clay County area.
An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Public Safety Center located at 15 Washington Street in Vermillion.
Information will be shared about MADD and how citizens can become involved in the non-profit group.
Locally during 2001, according to the Vermillion Police Department, 270 people were cited for underage consumption and 200 arrests were made for driving while intoxicated.
There also were 17 alcohol-related accidents resulting in two deaths in the Vermillion/Clay County area. Nationally, 25,000 people are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents. That relates to a life being lost every 20 minutes in an alcohol-related accident.
MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of crime and prevent underage drinking.
The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about MADD and how volunteers can make a difference in the community.
