Mount Rushmore posts all time visitation record Superintendent Don Striker announced that Mount Rushmore visitors arrived in record numbers in 2002 pushing the annual visitation to South Dakota's National Memorial higher in 2002 than was ever previously recorded.
Visitation to the memorial was 2,922,003 for 2002 recording a 13.7 percent increase over the 2,569,896 visits for 2001. The previous record was 2,755,394 set in 1994.
"Mount Rushmore has never received this many visitors in one year," said Striker. "Our visitation showed a sharp increase after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, an increase that continued right throughout the year."
Even with dry conditions and the threat of fires in 2002, the memorial continues to attract visitors. "The brand recognition that Mount Rushmore has attained as a result of the unwavering support of our neighbors and partners made us a natural stop for the millions of Americans who decided to vacation close to home," Striker said. "We are working diligently to provide a high quality, safe visit for the millions yet to come."
