Tanager JV escapes upset bid by Huskies by Jim Prosser In spite of a sub-par game, the Vermillion girls' junior varsity Tanagers escaped an upset bid and downed the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 19-14 Jan. 21 at Elk Point.
Natalie Johnson scored six points.
"Natalie's leadership emerged in the fourth quarter to jump start us," said Vermillion JV coach Kelly Knutson.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 5-2 after the first quarter, the score was 9-9 at halftime, and the Tanagers held a lead of 13-10 after the third period.
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only four turnovers and the Huskies committing only six.
"We played down to the level of our opponent," said coach Knutson. "I feel we should have dominated this team."
The Vermillion JV improved its record to 3-3, while EPJ dropped to 1-5.
The Vermillion JV connected on 1 of 3 three-point attempts and connected on 0 of 0 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 9 of 35 field goals, while EPJ was 6 of 22 from the field. EPJ connected on 0 of 2 three-point tries and hit 2 of 6 from the line.
