Tanagers defeated by Pierce Blue Jays by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Pierce, NE Blue Jays 52-36 in boys' basketball Jan. 14 at Pierce, NE as the winners held the lead after each quarter.

"We did not come ready to play," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We stood still defensively and didn't move offensively. We can't do that against good teams. We are a better team that we showed tonight."

The Tanagers fell behind 7-4 after the opening period, trailed 19-15 at halftime, and then trailed 37-23 going into the final period.

The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 3-7, while Pierce upped its mark to 5-4.

The Vermillion varsity hit 1 of 7 three-point attempts and sank 11 of 18 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 12 of 36 field goals.

Pierce was 17 of 46 from the field. Pierce also sank 8 of 25 three-pointers and made 10 of 16 from the line.
