Tanagers lose overtime battle to Redfield 53-49 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers lost to the Redfield Pheasants 53-49 in an overtime battle in Dec. 27 at Parkston in the first round of the Holiday Classic.
The score was tied 45-45 after regulation.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 18 points, grabbed eight boards and made four assists.
The Tanagers fell behind 13-10 at the end of the first period, led 26-24 after the second period, and then held a lead of 38-35 going into the fourth quarter.
"I was happy with the kids," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "We played hard and made some good adjustments as the game went on."
"As a team we gave up 20 offensive rebounds," coach Parish said. "In a close game, especially an overtime game, all of those possessions added up and came back to haunt us."
The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 1-3, while Redfield improved to 3-0.
Vermillion hit 2 of 11 three-point attempts and hit 19 of 30 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 41 field goal attempts, while Redfield was 18 of 52 from the field. Redfield hit 1 of 9 three-point attempts and made 16 of 28 free throw attempts.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
"Our kids continued to improve; Ashley hit a career milestone by scoring her 1000th point late in the game," coach Parish said. "Jackie Thomas chipped in with some points and kept our turnovers down by making good decisions."
