The game ended in a Tanager victory. by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 71-55 in boys' basketball Jan. 21 at Elk Point. The Tanagers shot 53 percent from the field in the contest.
The Tanagers had trailed by six with only one second left in the first period in a win ignited by a strong first half.
Nick Olson scored 25 points, sinking three 3-pointers.
The Tanagers led 16-7 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 38-22 at halftime, and then led 49-37 going into the fourth quarter.
"We handled the pressure very well," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We passed the ball and found the open guys. I'm very pleased with our effort. It's a good win for us."
Vermillion improved its record to 4-7, while Elk Point-Jefferson dropped to 1-9.
The Vermillion varsity made 6 of 17 three-pointers and hit 19 of 24 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 23 of 43 field goals, while Elk Point-Jefferson was 21 of 53 from the field. Elk Point-Jefferson hit 4 of 15 three-point tries and sank 15 of 20 from the line.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
"Jon Brooks contributed to the win with seven assists and 15 points," coach Huska said.
