Third quarter costly to Tanager freshmen by Jim Prosser In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Madison Bulldogs 54-36 in boy' basketball Jan. 9 at Madison after falling prey to an 18-0 third-quarter deficit.

The Vermillion freshmen were down just two at halftime.

Randy Kambambi scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Tanagers fell behind 18-10 after the opening period, trailed 28-26 at halftime, and then trailed 46-26 going into the final period.

The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 21 turnovers.

"We had problems handling the press at times," said Vermillion freshmen Coach Mark Iverson. "We played a decent first half and fell apart the second half."

The loss dropped Vermillion freshmen to a record of 1-3, while Madison improved to 4-0.

Vermillion freshmen hit 4 of 16 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 16 of 35 field goal attempts, while Madison was 24 of 48 from the field. Madison hit 4 of 10 three-pointers and connected on 2 of 4 free throw attempts.

HEAD:VMS gymnasts win over YMS in special dual

In a gymnastics meet held at the practice facility in Vermillion, the seventh/eighth grade gymnasts were outscored by the Junior Gazelles from Yankton 89.7-88.9 last Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Places for the young competitors in each event were:

"It was fun to watch these girls compete against gymnasts of their own age. It was exciting for them," said coach Mark Upward.

The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Sioux City North Stars 50-45 in boys' basketball Jan. 7 at home in a win keyed by a 15-3 second-quarter edge.

Jon Brooks scored 15 points, and had six assists. Nick Olson contributed with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Tyler Brown added 7 points and made six steals.

The Tanagers fell behind 17-7 after the opening period, led 22-20 after the second period, and then held a lead of 37-34 going into the fourth quarter.

Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 17 of 27 charity tosses to 7 of 10 for Sioux City North.

"This was more like the Tanagers," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We played great team defense. Offensively, we were patient and got good shots. This is a confidence builder."

Each team now has a record of 2-5.

Vermillion varsity hit 5 of 13 three-pointers. The Tanagers hit 14 of 39 field goal attempts, while Sioux City North was 17 of 50 from the field. Sioux City North sank 4 of 19 three-point tries.
