Trojans rally over Tanagers in fourth quarter by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a fourth-quarter rally and were nipped by the Parkston Lady Trojans 53-50 in basketball Jan. 10 at Vermillion.
Vermillion had led by one after the third quarter.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 23 points, grabbed five rebounds and made three assists.
The Tanagers trailed 12-8 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 28-27 at halftime, and then held a lead of 37-36 after the third quarter.
"We played pretty well tonight," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "Parkston has one of the better teams in the state year in and year out. We battled with them and played with a lot of intensity. Brittnee Powell had a big fourth quarter for them scoring 12 points when her team really needed it and we weren't able to counter. Overall, we played hard and played fairly well. As a coaching staff, we are just waiting for these experiences to turn into a few more wins hopefully sooner as opposed to later."
Vermillion saw its record fall to 3-4, while Parkston upped its mark to 5-1.
Vermillion hit 2 of 10 three-point attempts and sank 20 of 29 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 14 of 43 from the field, while Parkston was 19 of 56 from the field. Parkston connected on 3 of 13 three-pointers and hit 12 of 20 free throw attempts.
