Chamber singers, orchestra combine to perform Feb. 24 The USD Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Harden, will combine with the USD Community Orchestra for a performance of the hauntingly beautiful Requiem by French composer Gabriel Faure.
The free concert will be at 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24 in Slagle Auditorium on the USD campus. Featured soloists will be Professor Christopher Mitchell, bass-baritone, of the USD Department of Music faculty; and sopranos Siri Caltvedt and Allison Caster, members of the Chamber Singers.
The concert will also feature two winners of the orchestra's annual concerto competition, Trudy Jelsma, Bass Trombone, and Miriam Hedges, horn. Jelsma, a student of Dr. Larry Mitchell, will perform the first movement of James Barnes' Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra, and Hedges, a student of Dr. Gary Reeves, will play the first movement of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 2.
The orchestra will also play the overture to Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks. The concert will also be given at 10 a.m. the same day in Slagle Auditorium for the fourth grade students of the Vermillion schools.
