Pie Girls crowned soccer champs The Vermillion Pie Girls were crowned champions at the Winter Indoor Challenge Cup soccer tournament which was played Feb. 1 and 2 in Pierre. Playing in the Women's Open Division, the Pie Girls copped first place amongst a field of five teams that included current and former high school players from around the state.

The Pie Girls completed tournament play with an unblemished record of four victories and no defeats, claiming wins over Aberdeen, Brookings, Lead-Deadwood, and host Pierre. Vermillion outscored its opponents by a collective margin of 17 to 10, conceding an average of only 2.2 goals per game.

Tristen Denning led the Pie Girls scoring with four goals for the tournament, with Tara Job, Emma Erickson and Amanda Pederson each contributing three. Hilary Pederson tended goal behind the excellent defense of Kaylee Heesch, Jenna Gilkyson and Jamie Bernard.

Next action for the Pie Girls is March 1 and 2 in Sioux City when they defend their 2002 Womens Open title in the Sioux City Mardi Gras Classic Tournament.

In a superb team effort, the Vermillion Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to roll over the Pine Ridge Thorpes 71-52 in boys' junior varsity basketball Feb. 22 at home.

The Vermillion JV record now stands at 11-3. The Pine Ridge season mark fell to 8-5.

"Our defense in the third quarter was the turning point in the game," said Vermillion JV coach Rex Huska. "I thought we did a good job of getting to their shooters and contesting each shot."

The Thorpes tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 5 of 10 from long distance.

The Tanagers fell behind 21-15 at the end of the first period, trailed 32-30 at halftime, and then led 51-37 going into the final period.

The Vermillion JV sank 24 of 46 from the line. The Tanagers sank 18 of 42 field goals, while Pine Ridge was 18 of 38 from the field. The Thorpes sank 13 of 18 free throw tries.

The Vermillion JV held a 36-18 edge on the boards.
