St. Mary's misses shot; Warriorettes win 54-53 by Ashley Steffen A last second chance to send the girls' basketball game between Wakonda and Dell Rapids St. Mary's into overtime failed, and the Warriorettes were victorious by 54-53 score. St. Mary's senior Kelly Cunningham missed the second of two freethrows with no time left.
The non-conference game left the host team, Wakonda, the host team, was ahead by two when the last foul occured as the last second ticked off the clock.
Wakonda junior Nikki Johnston accidently fouled Cunningham trying to get an offensive rebound off a teammate's attempt at a freethrow. Johnston fouled out and Cunningham was sent to a lonely freethrow line at the other end. She made the first shot from the charity stripe, but missed the second.
The leading performers for Wakonda were Johnston, 18 points, Meghan Martz, 11 points and Lindsay Nelson, 10 points. Johnston also had eight rebounds, and Andrea Gregoire brought down seven rebounds.
