Strong first quarter leads to Tanager win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the West Central Trojans 56-46 in boys' basketball Jan. 30 at home in a win carried by a strong first quarter.

Nick Olson scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two steals. Jon Brooks contributed with 12 points and five assists.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 18-6 at the end of the first period, led 28-21 at halftime, and then led 46-34 going into the final period.

The contest was well-played, with each team committing only 9 turnovers.

"We had good first and third quarters," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We played aggressive and got good shots. The second and fourth quarter we played not to lose. West Central is a good team and we need to stay aggressive. Another good win for us."

The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 6-7, while West Central fell to 4-7.

The Vermillion varsity made 3 of 17 three-pointers and hit 13 of 16 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 20 of 56 field goals, while West Central was 17 of 46 from the field. West Central connected on 2 of 9 three-pointers and connected on 10 of 14 free throw attempts.
