Tanager freshmen roll over Madison by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' freshman Tanagers rolled over Madison 44-18 in basketball Jan. 17 at Vermillion in a win keyed by a 15-2 second-quarter edge.
The Tanagers had led by 25 in the fourth quarter.
The VHS girls' freshman team improved its record to 2-0. The Madison season mark fell to 0-3.
Brittney Babb scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Paige Prosser contributed with four assists, four steals and five rebounds.
"We have few girls to use but the ones we have play hard all the time," said VHS girls' freshman coach Ryan Heine.
The Tanagers jumped in front 6-2 after the first quarter, went into the locker room up 21-4 at halftime, and then led 30-12 after the third period.
The Tanagers forced 20 Madison turnovers to provide a big assist for the victory.
"The freshman team played together," said coach Heine.
The VHS freshmen hit 0 of 2 three-point attempts and made 4 of 13 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 20 of 44 field goal attempts, while Madison was 9 of 40 from the field. Madison sank 0 of 2 three-point tries and made 0 of 4 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
"Patricia Merrigan had a great career high with 8 points and four rebounds," coach Heine said.
