Tanager freshmen squeak by Trojans by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied to squeak past the West Central Trojans 47-44 in boys' basketball Jan. 30 at home. The Tanagers shot 59 percent from the field in the contest.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by one at halftime.
Randy Kabambi scored 22 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made four steals.
"We played a great all-around floor game," said Vermillion coach Mark Iverson.
The Tanagers fell behind 13-6 after the first quarter, but advantages of 13-7 and 19-9 in the second and third quarters gave them a lead of 38-29 going into the final period.
The Trojans tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 7 of 14 from long distance.
"We had a slow start but came awake in the third quarter and maintained the lead to the end," said coach Iverson.
The Vermillion freshmen improved their record to 3-3, while West Central dropped to 3-6.
The Vermillion freshmen made 2 of 5 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 22 of 37 field goal attempts, while West Central was 17 of 45 from the field. The Trojans connected on 2 of 7 free throw attempts.
