Tanagers champs at C-team tourney by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager girls cruised to three easy wins to claim the Gayville-Volin C-Team Tournament championship.

The tournament was held Friday, Feb. 21 in Gayville. The Gayville-Volin C team placed second in the tourney, followed by Wynot, NE, Gayville-Volin eight-grade, Hurley and Wakonda.

Vermillion 47 � Wakonda 17

Vermillion crushed the Wakonda Warriorettes 47-17 in the first round of the tournament. The Tanagers shot 50 percent from the field for the game.

The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only four turnovers and the Warriorettes committing only six.

The Tanagers took the lead 11-2 after the first quarter, and margins of 5-3 and 17-5 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 33-10 going into the final period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 8-3, while Wakonda fell to 3-5.

The VHS freshmen connected on 2 of 4 three-pointers and connected on 9 of 16 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 18 of 36 field goals, while Wakonda was 7 of 29 from the field. Wakonda made 1 of 3 three-pointers and made 2 of 7 from the line.

Vermillion held a 27-13 edge on the boards.

The VermillionTanagers rallied to down the Gayville-Volin Raiderettes eighth-grade team 28-21 Feb. 21 at Gayville in the second round of the Gayville-Volin C-Team Tournament.

Vermillion had trailed by two going into the final period.

The contest was well-played, with each team committing only six turnovers.

The Tanagers led 8-7 after the opening period, trailed 15-11 at halftime, and then trailed 19-17 after the third period.

Vermillion improved its record to 9-3, while Gayville-Volin dropped to 6-5.

Vermillion hit 1 of 3 three-point attempts and made 5 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 11 of 24 from the field, while Gayville-Volin was 9 of 27 from the field. Gayville-Volin made 0 of 2 three-point tries and connected on 3 of 6 free throw tries.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 9-5 after the first quarter, led 20-9 at halftime, and then led 22-13 after the third period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 10-3, while the Gayville-Volin C-team fell to 5-5.
