Tanagers defeat Raiderettes 74-35 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers routed the Gayville-Volin Raiderettes 74-35 in Feb. 18 at Vermillion. The Tanagers shot 50 percent from the field for the game.

Ashley Bjorkman led the Tanager offense with 29 points, followed by Jackie Thomas with 13 points.

The Tanagers took the lead 22-7 after the first quarter, and margins of 22-8 and 19-7 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 63-22 going into the final period.

The Tanagers committed only eight turnovers while forcing 18.

"Our kids played very well defensively," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "It was a nice game for our seniors to play in front of all their friends and family that traveled to see them. Allison Stewart and Kaylee Heesch both played their final home game scoring 4 and 6 points respectively; they do many things for us that don't always show up on the stat sheets that are very appreciated by the players and coaching staff."

Vermillion improved its record to 9-9, while Gayville-Volin dropped to 8-10.

Vermillion connected on 8 of 18 three-point tries and sank 6 of 10 from the line. The Tanagers hit 29 of 58 field goals, while Gayville-Volin was 13 of 48 from the field. Gayville-Volin sank 0 of 5 three-pointers and made 9 of 16 free throw attempts.

Vermillion held a 40-23 edge on the boards.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.

"Ashley Bjorkman ended the night with her 1,286 career point putting her first on the all time scoring chart for Vermillion High School," coach Parish said. "She has been an incredible young lady during her time here, and we look forward to more from her as we enter district play on Monday. Jackie Thomas had a very nice game doing a little bit of everything for us � 13 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals."
