Team effort leads to Vermillion victory by Jim Prosser In a superb team effort, the Vermillion Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to roll over the Pine Ridge Thorpes 71-52 in boys' junior varsity basketball Feb. 22 at home.
The Vermillion JV record now stands at 11-3. The Pine Ridge season mark fell to 8-5.
"Our defense in the third quarter was the turning point in the game," said Vermillion JV coach Rex Huska. "I thought we did a good job of getting to their shooters and contesting each shot."
The Thorpes tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 5 of 10 from long distance.
The Tanagers fell behind 21-15 at the end of the first period, trailed 32-30 at halftime, and then led 51-37 going into the final period.
The Vermillion JV sank 24 of 46 from the line. The Tanagers sank 18 of 42 field goals, while Pine Ridge was 18 of 38 from the field. The Thorpes sank 13 of 18 free throw tries.
The Vermillion JV held a 36-18 edge on the boards.
