Vermillion Tanagers nipped by Red Raiders by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost a second-half lead and were nipped by the Wagner Red Raiders 43-42 in girls' basketball Jan. 28 at home.
Vermillion had led by two at halftime.
Eighth-grader Chelsea Gauer proved that she could play at this level.
"We made a lot of mental mistakes that hurt us in the end," said Vermillion girls' freshman coach Ryan Heine.
The Tanagers trailed 15-13 after the first quarter, led 23-21 at halftime, and then trailed 29-27 after the third quarter.
"We played aggressive until the last 16 seconds, then it came down to who more wanted a win," said coach Heine.
Vermillion saw its record fall to 3-1, while Wagner upped its mark to 4-2.
Vermillion connected on 0 of 2 three-point attempts and made 6 of 11 free throw attempts. The Redbirds connected on 18 of 35 field goal attempts, while Wagner was 15 of 33 from the field. Wagner connected on 0 of 1 three-point tries and hit 13 of 19 from the line.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
"Michelle Olson played a position that she normally doesn't, but it proved how valuable she is anywhere on the court," Coach Heine said.
