Vermillion varsity topped by Wagner by Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls' varsity Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a second-half rally and were topped by the Wagner Red Raiders 49-44 in basketball Jan. 28 at Vermillion.
Vermillion had led by four at halftime.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, made three steals and three assists.
Vermillion jumped ahead 18-12 after the first quarter, but was outscored 8-6 in the second period and 13-8 in the third to trail 33-32 going into the final period.
"We got off to a good start tonight; our kids were playing hard and caused them some problems," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "With Kathleen Redlin home sick with the flu, we got into some strange rotations early as Melissa Olson got into some foul trouble. The second quarter and the beginning of the third really killed us tonight; we didn't have the same fire and energy that we have had at our previous home games. Our girls have played quite a stretch of games since Madison and I think we are pretty tired physically. Wagner played really well, after a slow start they methodically got back in the game and did all of the necessary things to shut us down."
Vermillion saw its record fall to 7-6, while Wagner upped its mark to 8-4.
Vermillion sank 3 of 10 three-pointers and sank 15 of 17 from the line. The Tanagers hit 13 of 41 from the field, while Wagner was 17 of 37 from the field. Wagner connected on 1 of 6 three-pointers and sank 14 of 23 free throw tries.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
"Ashley Bjorkman led us in scoring again, we really needed someone else to share that responsibility tonight and unfortunately no one stepped up," coach Parish said. "We continue to get better but still have some things to work on if we want to achieve our team goals that we set at the beginning of the year."
