Warriors fall to St. Mary's; defeat Viborg by Tyler Knudson The Wakonda Warriors fought a losing battle in their attempt to defeat the number two "B" ranked boys' basketball squad from Dell Rapids St. Mary's.
The 10-3 Warriors were defeated soundly Feb. 3 by the Cardinals 104-62.
The game started off very close, but Dell Rapids soon took the lead. At the end of the first quarter, the Cardinals were up by 24 points.
The Warriors started to come back in the second quarter but they were still down at halftime.
The rest of the game was a battle, but Dell Rapids St. Mary's still maintained the lead.
Leading the Warriors were Nick Skonhovd with 22 points and eight assists, and Alex Nielsen with 18 points and seven rebounds.
The Warrior junior varsity contest also lost to the Cardinals 63-25. Leading scorers for the Warriors were Brandon Parvin, Tyler Knudson and Shaun Hessman all with 7 points.
The Warriors traveled to Viborg Feb. 7. The Warriors led the first quarter 17 to 14, and also had a three-point lead at half time.
Wakonda had a little scare when leading scorer Nick Skonhovd fouled out in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The team held on, however, defeating Viborg 69-66.
Leading scorers for the Warriors were Alex Nielsen with 21 points and 13 rebounds, Nick Skonhovd 16 points, and Brandon Parvin with 13 points.
The Warriors are now 11 and 4 on the season.
