C-Hawks edge VHS Tanagers 57-56 by Jim Prosser Canton's Kyle Hoffman scored with 20 seconds left in the game to give the C-Hawks a 1 point victory as the Vermillion Tanagers were edged by the Canton C-Hawks 57-56 in boys' basketball Feb. 28 at home.
"The ball barely reached the rim, then skittered around before falling in," said Vermillion varsity Coach Jason Huska of the clinching moment.
This was the last regular season game for the Tanager varsity. Vermillion saw its record fall to 9-9, while Canton upped its mark to 12-7.
Nick Olson scored 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made two blocks. Jon Brooks added 16 points and made nine assists.
The Tanagers fell behind 15-8 after the first quarter, but advantages of 19-15 and 18-15 in the second and third quarters knotted the game 45-45 going into the final period.
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only eight turnovers and the C-Hawks committing only 7.
"We played hard, however we did not do a good job on the defensive boards," said coach Huska. "We had our chances but came up short. I'm proud of our effort."
Vermillion connected on 6 of 16 three-pointers and hit 8 of 9 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 21 of 44 from the field, while Canton was 24 of 56 from the field. Canton sank 6 of 19 three-point attempts and made 3 of 9 free throw attempts.
