Coyote softball will host DakotaDome Classic The South Dakota softball team will host the DakotaDome Tournament on Saturday and Sunday after hosting Minnesota State-Moorhead Friday afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader (6/8 p.m.) at the DakotaDome.
The DakotaDome Classic will be held Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30. Eight teams will participate, including Minnesota State-Moorhead, Southwest State University, Northern State University, Minnesota State-Mankato, North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota, Augustana College and The University of South Dakota.
Sophomore pitcher-first baseman Angela Palma of Omaha, NE, is off to a fast start for South Dakota. She leads USD in pitching with a 7-4 record including a 1.90 earned run average with 56 strikeouts. She also is excelling at the plate with 16 hits in 45 at bats for a .356 batting average. She has four doubles, a triple, six rbi, 22 total bases with .489 slugging percentage and .383 on-base percentage.
Sophomore catcher/first baseman Jodi Callan of Omaha, NE, is leading the Coyotes with a .469 batting average. She has 23 hits in 49 at bats including two doubles and four home runs. Callan, who had a 14 game hitting streak snapped in the 2-0 loss to Truman State, has scored 10 runs with a .755 slugging percentage and .559 on-base percentage. Callan who is leading the team with 14 RBI, has six career home runs which ties for second (Kris Raduenz, Michelle Junod, Kristi Gorman and Jessica Bills) all time at USD.
After 17 games, the Coyotes are hitting .292 as a team. They have 135 hits in 462 at bats with 20 doubles and eight triples with 79 runs scored. The Coyotes also have eight home runs on the year. Mollie Witherbee (Omaha, NE) is hitting .367 with 18 hits in 49 at bats. Palma is hitting at a clip of .356 with 16 hits in 45 at bats.
With 29 stolen bases this season in 35 attempts the Coyotes have been taking advantage of their speed. All-NCC outfielder Julie MacRunnels of Sioux Falls is leading the team with 11 steals in 12 attempts. She now has 36 career stolen bases, which is fourth all time at USD.
Palma leads South Dakota with a 7-4 record and a 1.90 earned run average in 14 appearances. Palma, who has recorded 70 innings, has started eight games, recording six complete games, two shutouts and a save. She has 56 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .198 batting average. Senior Tiffany Hill, Sioux Falls, owns a 2-1 record with a 3.08 earned run average. She has one complete game in five starts with 15 strikeouts in 25 innings. Judy Alswager (sophomore, Columbus, NE) is 1-1 with three starts and a total of 17 innings pitched. She has eight strikeouts. As a team, USD owns a 2.61 earned run average with seven complete games and two shutouts. USD pitchers in 118 innings, allowed 126 hits, 62 runs (44 earned) with 25 walks and 83 strikeouts. Opposing teams are hitting .265 against South Dakota.
