Fifth-graders play in basketball tourney

Fifth-graders play in basketball tourney Playing for Edward D. Jones, fifth-graders from Vermillion traveled to Elk Point on March 7 and 8 to play in the Edgar's two-day basketball tournament.

Coach Curt Robinson was pleased with the second place finish, winning two of three games. This brings the team's season record to five wins and seven losses.

Tournament play began on Friday evening against the fifth-graders of Canton. Vermillion downed the Canton team 30-10. Vermillion's scoring was led by Garrett Smith-Keller with 12 points, followed by Aaron Steele and Michael Walker who each contributed 6 points.

Other scorers were Jordan Robinson and Channing Kiertzner, each with 2 points. Smith-Keller led the team in rebounds with nine, closely followed by Walker with eight. Nick Anglin contributed four boards, Sam Miller and Kiertzner each had three. Steele had three assists, Robinson, Miller, and Kiertzner each had one assist.

Play resumed on Saturday with back-to-back games. Vermillion took on the Centerville team, defeating them 26-15. Smith-Keller had a great game putting up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Other scorers were Steele and Denny Kainrath with 4 points each, Anglin and Kiertzner with 2 points each, and sinking free throws were Miller and Robinson each with 1 point. Contributing on the boards were Walker with seven; Anglin with six; and Steele, Kiertzner and Robinson each with three.

In the second game Vermillion fell to the host team from Elk Point 33-24. Leading scorers for Vermillion were Robinson and Steele each with 8 points. Smith-Keller contributed 4 points while Walker and Kiertzner each had 2. Smith-Keller led in rebounding with seven, Miller had four boards, Anglin had three and Steele, Kainrath, Robinson and Walker each contributed one board.

Other team members not present at this tournament were assistant coach Kent Andre, Cole Andre, Sam Eckstrom and Tim Tigert. The Edward D. Jones team will be in action at the Roger Haas Tournament in Yankton March 22 and in Sioux Falls on March 29.
