Lio finalist in competition The 2003 Young Musician Competition Preliminary auditions took place Sunday, Feb. 9 at Augustana College. This state and regional competition for piano, strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion is open to all full-time students through their senior year in high school. This year, 34 students participated in the preliminaries and 12 were selected as finalists.
Finalists will now compete for cash prizes of $500 for firstplace, $350 for second place, $200 for third place, $50 for honorable mention, and the Henry Charles Smith Award of $250 for Spirit and Enthusiasm, all courtesy of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra League.
Competition finals will take place on Sunday, March 9 at 6 p.m. at the Washington Pavilion.
Finalists selected for this year's competition include Wilber Lio from Vermillion.
The public is welcome to attend the Young Musician Competition Finals beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 9 at the Washington Pavilion. There is no charge for the event, but guests must call the Symphony Office at 605-335-7933 or toll free 866-681-7376 for reservations.
