Residents invited to nominate historic properties for award Clay County residents are invited to nominate property owners who have made efforts to preserve and restore their historic properties for a Clay County Commission Preservation Award. The preservation award program, which is cosponsored by the Clay County Commission and the Clay County Historic Preservation Commission, aims to recognize and encourage outstanding preservation efforts by commercial and private property owners in Clay County
Work that is eligible for awards includes preservation, restoration, sensitive additions to older properties, and adaptive reuse of older structures.
The commission is especially interested in nominations of preservation efforts that are appropriate to the style of the structure, accurate to the date of the construction, show quality workmanship and sensitivity to the surrounding area. Awards may be given to rural residential, urban residential, commercial, agricultural, and other types of buildings.
Nomination forms may be obtained from the Clay County Historic Preservation Commission, c/o Austin-Whittemore House, 15 Austin Street, Vermillion, SD 57069.
Requests for an electronic version of the form may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org. No expertise is required to complete the form, which should take no more than a few minutes to complete.
The deadline for nominations is April 18. Final awards are expected to be made by the Clay County Commission during Historic Preservation Week in May. Contact Holly Straub at 624-3049 for additional information about this award program.
