Special Olympics basketball tourney scheduled March 14-15 Join Special Olympics South Dakota at the 20th Annual State Basketball Tournament. The host city of Mitchell will be bustling with athletes, officials, volunteers, and families on March 14 and 15 for this event.
Approximately 33 teams of various ages from across the state will compete in this tournament. The following agencies and communities are proud to sponsor teams: Aberdeen Schools � Aberdeen Golden Eagles, ATC, Inc. of Aberdeen, Brandon, Advance of Brookings, Canton, Chester Area Schools, Huron, Hyde School District, Lyman School District, Mitchell, NESC of Hamlin, Black Hills Workshop of Rapid City, Rapid City, SDDC of Redfield, Rutland Elementary, Sioux Falls, Vermillion, Watertown, and Yankton.
Local gymnasiums will be the venues for this tournament, including Mitchell Recreation Center, the Corn Palace, Holy Spirit School, Dakota Wesleyan University and Mitchell High School.
The state basketball tournament provides a variety of competitions for Special Olympics South Dakota athletes. Teams compete in tournament play that consists of several different divisions and ability levels.
Other athletes compete in the individual basketball skills contest or as a team in the cheerleading competition. Activities which will highlight the 2003 State Basketball Tournament, include the opening ceremonies, award presentations, the banquet, and dance.
Special Olympics South Dakota provides year-round sports training and competition for children (8 years and older) and adults with mental disabilities.
