VHS boys' basketball 2003 statistics by Jim Prosser In what was unquestionably the toughest Class "A" schedule, the Tanager boys' basketball team suffered through a five game in seven day early stretch when they lost to highly regarded and ranked Alcester Hudson and Lennox as well as to class "AA" Sioux City West and South Sioux City, NE.
They also faced Sioux City North, Pierce, NE, #2 ranked Pine Ridge (twice), along with perennial foes Winner, West Central, and Madison during the season. Their 11 win, 10 loss record included revenge wins over Alcester-Hudson, and Pine Ridge and the championship crown in District 8A. The Tanagers had a six of seven winning streak late in the season.
Here are some high points for individual performances during 2002-03:
Senior Nick Olson was the top scorer in most of the 21 games during the season, registering 399 total points with 56 percent accuracy. Other top scorers were: Jon Brooks � 281, Nathan Boots � 141, and Adam Brunick � 112.
Top rebounders were: Olson � 172, Jeff Brevik � 87, Brunick � 60, and Dave Yutrzenka � 47. Dishing out assists were: Brooks � 97, Boots � 39, Tyler Brown � 35, and Olson � 28. Steals were accomplished by: Brooks � 32, Brown � 29, Olson � 22, and Brunick � 20.
There were four seniors and nine juniors on the varsity roster. Olson averaged 20 PPG and Brooks had 14 PPG while shooting 88 percent on 74/84 free throws. The best field goal average wes claimed by reserve Dave Yutrzenka with a 66 percent success.
"I'm very proud of all our players. We had a tough schedule to begin with and could have shut down the rest of the year. But, we had good senior leadership and great kids to work with," coach Jason Huska said. "I'm pleased that we played our best basketball at the right time, except that we just came up a little short. We have a good nucleus returning next basketball season."
