VHS track and field season opens with Lennon meet by Jim Prosser With upwards of 1,200 athletes participating in the "large school" section of the Hy-Vee Dan Lennon Invitational Track Meet, the VHS boys' and girls' track and field teams joined in the competition to open their new season Monday, March 24.
The meet was dominated by out-of-state schools but the Tanagers were successful in several events.
In the girls' division, Annie Carlson placed third in the triple jump with a total distance of 34' 4", while the boys' division had Jerad Hesla tying for seventh in the high jump (5' 10"), and three relay teams earned places in the top eight in each (4x200m, 1:40.42 � Jared Burcham, B.J. Campbell, Kellen Cusick, and Ben Oberle; 4x400m, 3:44.83 � Bart Miller, Tyler Brown, Justin Manning, and Ben Oberle; and sprint medley, 3:57.36 � B.J. Campbell, Ben Oberle, Bart Miller, and Tyler Brown).
Coach Jim McGuire was satisfied with the early performances in both the girls' and boys' Tanager teams.
The next meets for the Tanagers are scheduled for Monday, April 1 at the ex-SIC Invite in the DakotaDome, at 5 p.m. and the Dakota Valley Invite in North Sioux City on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
