Wakonda track season is underway by Ashley Steffen About 20 high school and junior high athletes are putting their basketball shoes away and getting out their running shoes. Under the direction of new head track coach Larry Wynia, the track team begun practice Monday, March 10.
Wynia will be getting help from Tony Skonhovd, distance and strength coach; and Ken Wright, jumps, throws, and junior high coach. Wynia will head the program and mostly attend to the sprints.
Coach Wynia said, "Wakonda's lack of depth will hurt us at big meets, but we have some athletes with state meet experience that will really help the younger athletes develop. Both of our boys and girls team need to be respectable. We need to develop depth."
Returning letter winners from last year were seniors Andrea Gregoire and Lindsay Knudson; juniors Kim Henriksen, Nikki Johnston, Brett Logue, and Nick Skonhovd; sophomores Eric Skonhovd; and freshman Robert Gregoire.
Athletes joining them for this year's team are senior John Lindblom; sophomore Bethany Parvin; and freshmen Tiffany Ganschow, Ashley Steffen and Tyler Knudson.
Their first meet will be April 1 in Centerville or April 6 in Elk Point.
