Coyote baseball team hosts conference leader The South Dakota baseball team (19-14, 6-6) will play host to NCC leader Northern Colorado (23-14, 9-3) this weekend at Prentis Park, with doubleheaders starting Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
USD is coming off a disappointing 1-3 showing against North Dakota State last week in Fargo.
Looking to rebound this weekend, the Coyotes will have the advantage of playing at the friendly confines of Prentis Park, where they are 9-1 this season. In 10 home games, USD has outscored its opponents 93-33, while its pitching staff owns a 3.28 ERA. Senior righthander John Brunswold, Apple Valley, MN, has been brilliant at home, posting a 4-0 mark with a 0.45 ERA in four appearances at Prentis Park.
Northern Colorado also is coming off a 1-3 showing last week on a road trip to Augustana. The Bears are the top hitting team in the league with a batting average of .344.
The University of South Dakota football team will play seven of their 11 games in 2003 at the DakotaDome. USD will play host to three of its four nonconference and also four of seven North Central Conference opponents at the Dome.
South Dakota will play 11 NCAA Division II opponents, including two that reached the NCAA Division II playoffs. Three of the Coyotes' 2003 opponents were ranked in the D2football.com top 25 final national rankings.
In the home season opener, South Dakota will host nonconference opponent Concordia-St. Paul on Vermillion/Clay County Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. A week later, USD will face 2002 playoff qualifier Minnesota-Duluth in nonconference action on Youth Day at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13 at the DakotaDome.
After traveling to Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Sept. 20, USD returns to the Dome for their North Central Conference opener vs. Nebraska-Omaha on Family Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Highlighting the conference season will be a week-six (Oct. 11) match-up with Minnesota State-Mankato during Dakota Days. A full weekend of festivities will be featured, including the 2 p.m. contest against the Mavericks.
In addition, USD will host Hall of Fame weekend on Oct. 25. After a Saturday morning banquet and induction ceremony, USD will play rival South Dakota State at 2 p.m. in the DakotaDome. The Coyotes will play NCC road games at Augustana (Oct. 4), St. Cloud State (Oct. 18) and North Dakota State (Nov. 8).
USD will honor its seniors on Saturday, Nov. 8 when the Coyotes host North Dakota at 2 p.m. The regular season home schedule concludes with a nonconference game against Lincoln University at noon on Saturday, Nov. 15. The game will begin at noon due to the South Dakota High School Football Championships, which will be held on Nov. 14-15 at the DakotaDome.
