Downtown Vermillion on national register The Clay County Historic Preservation Commission has announced the listing of the Downtown Vermillion Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places effective March 7.
Official notification was received March 25 from the National Park Service, under the United States Department of the Interior. This federal acknowledgment culminates 18 months of work by members of the CCHPC, and the staff of the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office in Pierre.
Extensive individual survey work on each of the 50 structures making up the district began in September 2001. This work continued into December, with the help of local volunteers and University of South Dakota students.
The history of Vermillion was then compiled and made a part of the application process. Architectural descriptions were written for all of the properties with the help of the State Historic Preservation Office.
