Fifth-grade ends season on high note The fifth-grade basketball team sponsored by Edward Jones finished its season on a high note winning the fifth-grade division at the Lincoln Patriot's last blast tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday, April 5.
After playing two sixth-grade teams and coming up "short," the Vermillion team faced fifth-graders from Milbank. The quick Milbank team led most of the game. The Vermillion team gained the lead at the end of the third quarter and won the game 37-33.
Cole Andre led the team in scoring with 14 points, Aaron Steele put 8 points on the board while Garrett Smith-Keller had 7 points. Sam Miller, Denny Kainrath, Tim Tigert, and Jordan Robinson each had a basket. Smith-Keller led the team in rebounds with 11, Andre pulled down four boards, Tigert contributed three, Sam Ekstrom, Michael Walker, Nick Anglin, Steele, and Robinson brought down two each and Miller had one.
The Vermillion team showed its quickness by taking the ball away from the Milbank team 16 times. Smith-Keller had six steals, Steele had five, Andre took away three, and Ekstrom and Miller each had one steal.
In a close match with St. Lamberts of Sioux Falls, the Vermillion team won 48-43. Andre led in scoring with 12 points followed closely by Smith-Keller with 10 points. Ekstrom, Kainrath, and Robinson put up 6 points each and Steele contributed 4 points; Channing Kiertzner and Miller rounded out the scoring with a basket each.
Team rebounds were led by Smith-Keller with eight. Anglin, and Walker had three boards each, Andre had two rebounds and Tigert, Ekstrom, Miller, and Kainrath each grabbed one rebound.
Ekstrom led the team in steals with three. Miller, Steele, and Andre added two take-aways each; Kainrath and Tigert each had one steal.
The Vermillion team has played well together and had a great first season. Coached by Curt Robinson and Kent Andre, the team ended the season with a record of 10 wins and 12 losses.
