Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #13 of Wakonda will be selling poppies in Wakonda during the month of May; look for a display in the local businesses. They will also be at the school on April 28 during the elementary concert and May 8 during the talent show.
The auxiliary sells poppies each year to remind Americans of the price of war and the sacrifice of millions of lives. At the same time, the Poppy Day distribution honors all of America's veterans of five wars and two conflicts.
The program began after shattered bodies and minds returned from France following World War I, an effort of veterans and their families to "take care of their own" and to remind the public of the debt owed to those who served and died. It has continued, honoring the war dead from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam, Grenada/Lebanon, Panama, and Persian Gulf, a tribute to America's citizen soldiers.
This year we are especially grateful to our soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere who are protecting our freedoms. Please remember them when you buy your poppies this year!
