Operation Pride clean up is May 3; focus is below bluff Area residents are reminded to prepare for Operation Pride's one-day free clean up Saturday, May 3.
Collection begins at 8 a.m. If Vermillion should experience extremely bad weather, such as heavy snow, the event will be cancelled for 2003.
The designated area this year is below the bluff within city limits. Residents within the designated area will receive free pick up of yard waste, tree limbs, junk, rubbish, old furniture, appliances and separated recyclables. Households in the area will receive a brochure/letter with full directions. These residents are requested to place "separated piles" of materials at the curb prior to 8 am Saturday.
Operation Pride, a project to help spruce up Vermillion, is sponsored by the University of South Dakota Coyote football team, the city of Vermillion Solid Waste Department, Wells Fargo Bank, Polaris, CorTrust Bank of Vermillion, Century 21/French Realty, Coldwell Banker/Dakota Realty, Herren Schempp Building Supply, Vermillion Chamber of Commerce, USD Greek Community, Broadcaster/Plain Talk, and KVHT FM 106.3 and KVTK AM 1570.
Operation Pride began in 2000. Its goals are to clean up a portion of Vermillion each year. To date the project has cleaned up over 75 blocks of Vermillion and hauled away over 178 tons of material. This is the fourth year of the project.

To help in this year's effort, the Operation Pride Committee is asking all residents in Vermillion to "Take Pride In Vermillion." Individuals, families, community organizations, church groups and students are asked to spend two or three hours on Saturday, May 3 and "Pick it Up ~ Paint it Up ~ Perk it Up." Spend a little time picking up litter in a public area, rake a yard for someone who may need help, or assist an organization to spruce up their grounds.
If you need spruce up area suggestions, call 677-7076. Register your spruce up project with the Vermillion Solid Waste Department and you will receive a special Operation Pride Landfill Voucher for collected trash disposal May 3.
Your organization can also spruce up Vermillion by collecting aluminum cans and make money at the same time. The recycling facility pays cash for aluminum cans.
All residents of Vermillion and Clay County may take advantage of the Landfill Voucher that was published in the Broadcaster in late March or pick one up at city hall, the county auditor's office, the landfill or the recycling facility. The voucher is valid up to $15 on materials delivered to the Vermillion landfill and good throughout the year.
The Landfill is open April through October on Saturday mornings 8 a.m. to noon. Recycling is open Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, year round.
Free yard waste days at
the landfill will be April 28-May 9.
