Tanager baseball team opens vs. Yankton Bucks

Tanager baseball team opens vs. Yankton Bucks by Jim Prosser Brrrrr The Vermillion baseball team played a double header against Yankton last Wednesday, April 2 at Prentis Park.

A late wintery blast gave an unwelcome reception to outdoor athletic endeavors but the Tanagers perservered through two games (an opening JV match and a varsity seven-inning game), covering nearly five hours of cold, windy conditions.

The first game was called after four innings due to time constraints, with the score tied 2-2. Yankton's pitcher Tanner Conroy was credited with a no hitter, but four walks and a couple of errors marred the shutout.

Vermillion's pitching duo, Jason Donald and Tim Bleil, combined for a one hitter, but it was a two rbi double (both runners were on base by walks). It seemed poetic justice that the game was declared a draw!

Line scores: Bucks JV 2 runs, 1 hit, 3 errors, 2 lob; Tanagers JV 2 runs, 0 hits, 3 errors, 3 lob.

Game #2 looked, at first, like Drew Lawrence, the starting pitcher, would be able to hold the Bucks scoreless before coming up with a pulled muscle and having to be replaced in the second inning. Danny Holoch relieved and completed 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs (two unearned) and Kevin Bleil finished the game, being charged with nine runs (four unearned) as the Tanagers commited five errors and six bases on balls while giving up nine hits and striking out eight batters.

Line scores: YHS Varsity 13 runs, 9 hits, 1 error, 8 lob; VHS Varsity 3 runs, 4 hits, 5 errors, 1 lob.

The players who scored for the Tanagers were Jared Burcham who was 1 for 3 batting, and reserves Ryan Mockler and Jason Donald. Andy Ofstehage was credited with two RBIs as he also went 1 for 3. The season record is 0-1.
