Vermillion girls finish fourth in sophomore Willie Mac The Lady Tanagers lost to Madison 48-42 in the third place game last Saturday afternoon in Watertown.
Vermillion led 28-22 at the half, but cold shooting, foul trouble, and trouble handling the Bulldogs' press caused them to lose their lead with about two minutes left in the game and had to foul to get the ball back.
Leading scorers were Jackie Thomas with 14, Annie Roche, 11, Michelle Olson, 9 and Heather Walker had 4 points and four rebounds.
In first round action on Friday night the Tanagers handled the Flandreau Flyers 61-31. Vermillion took an early lead and never looked back with a 34-17 advantage at half-time. Leading scorers: Thomas, 21, Melissa Olson, 9, Michelle Olson, 8, Kelsie Austin, 8, Roche, 6, Alisha O'Connor, 6 points, five assists, Brittney Babb, 4, Paige Prosser and Ellen Odson each with 2.
In the semi-final match-up Vermillion took on Hamlin in a close game as it was 20-19 at half-time with Hamlin leading. Hamlin pulled away late in the game to take a 42-34 win over the Tanagers.
Leading scorers: Michelle Olson, 11 points, seven rebounds, Melissa Olson, 7 points, six rebounds, Walker and Roche with 5 points each and Odson 3 points, Thomas, 3 points and five steals.
