VHS girls' golf team sets goals as season begins by Jim Prosser The VHS Tanagers State A Champion girls' golf team was slated to face the class AA Champion Brookings Bobcats at The Bluffs last Friday, March 28. But weather conditions were not favorable and the match was rescheduled for Friday, April 4 at 2 p.m. in Vermillion.
This gives us a chance to preview the 2003 season for the Coach Kirk Hogen's team which won the class A trophy in 2002 and has the entire varsity membership returning for this year. They include Seniors state champion Allison Stewart and state runner-up Karrie Plate, along with Ashley Bjorkman, Dru Van Kley and Megan Deaver; and Jackie Thomas, a sophomore.
The junior varsity is led by eighth-graders Anna Isaackson, Chelsea Guaer, and Tristen Upward, along with Emily Houska and Clare Bucklin. Also added to this year's JV team are freshman Sara Mayer and seventh-grader Liz Day.
Because the State A Tournament will be contested at The Bluffs on May 19 and 20, many area teams are interested in playing duals or tournaments with the Tanagers at The Bluffs, according to coach Hogen. As a result, there are five duals and an invitational tourney in Vermillion during the season. In addition to those events, the Tanagers will play a triangular and the invitational at Yankton, as well as invitationals in Mitchell, Sioux City North, and Brookings.
"The team's goal for the season is to be focused on each match as they come," Hogen said. "It will be fun to watch these girls in competition. They are a great group to coach."
