Carpenter named assistant Highway Patrol superintendent South Dakota Highway Patrol Superintendent Colonel Dan Mosteller, has appointed Captain James M. Carpenter as the assistant superintendent of the Highway Patrol.
Carpenter of Pierre, began his career with the Highway Patrol in 1978. He was a trooper stationed in Burke and Winner until 1989 when he was promoted to motor carrier sergeant in Vermillion. Carpenter moved to Pierre in 1991 and assumed the duties of training sergeant.
From 1992 to 1996 he was the District Four administrative sergeant and in 1996 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Since May 2001, Carpenter has served as the District Four commander in Pierre.
He replaces Dan Mosteller as major, who was appointed as superintendent of the Highway Patrol by Gov. Rounds on April 2.
