Gregoire recognized at excellence luncheon by Heather Hessman Senior Andrea Gregoire was recognized at the Academic Excellence Recognition Luncheon in Pierre on April 29. It was hosted by the Associated School Boards of South Dakota along with Governor Mike Rounds.
Schools nominate students whose academic standing puts them in the top 1 percent of their class. Gregoire, this year's WHS valedictorian, met those standards.
"Don't ever let anybody tell you that your future isn't as bright as anyone else's anyplace else in the world," Rounds told an audience of more than 500 that included the 229 honored students, their family members, and school officials.
The Associated School Boards of South Dakota organized the annual event. Citibank and the South Dakota Community Foundation are sponsors.
A jazz band from Brandon Valley High entertained the students and their guests during the meal.
"Teachers didn't get into this business for the money," Rounds said. "If they did they'd be doing something else. We don't pay our public employees a lot of money ? Those teachers, they're proud of you, and you are what they're in school to do."
Rounds said states covet South Dakota's young people because those students "know right from wrong; know how to get along with other people; and know the value of working hard."
