IOOF to dedicate plaque

IOOF to dedicate plaque Members of the IOOF Grand Lodge of South Dakota will dedicate a plaque honoring the members of IOOF Lodge #155 of Wakonda, who served in World War I from 1914 to 1918. This dedication will be in conjunction with the Memorial Day Service, at the Veterans Memorial in Wakonda, conducted by Gingrich Dixon Post #13 at 11:30 a.m., May 26.

The bronze plaque honoring these men has a rather clouded and mysterious past. It is not known where the plaque was originally placed. What is known is that it was rescued from the Wakonda town dump some years ago. A lengthy stay in a farm shop and disposal in an old pickup, it was eventually delivered to Girard Auction in hopes of delivery to the Legion Post.

It has been refinished and placed on permanent display next to the Lodge Hall Memorial which formerly occupied the site of the Veterans Memorial at the corner of Second and Iowa streets in Wakonda.
