Memorial Day services scheduled in Vermillion by David Lias Memorial Day services will be celebrated Monday, May 26, at the Clay County Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Clay County Courthouse.
The program, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Clay Post 3061, will begin at 10:30 a.m. In case of rain, the services will be held inside the courthouse.
Guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Reid Christopherson, executive officer of the South Dakota Air National Guard, Sioux Falls.
Wreaths will be placed by representatives of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW and the VFW Auxiliary.
The VFW firing squad will present the salute to honor the dead, followed by the playing of Taps.
Weather permitting, a large American flag that flew over the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor will be hoisted up the large flagpole at the veterans memorial here.
Darrell Christopherson, Vermillion, a Pearl Harbor survivor, was presented the flag when he visited the Pearl Harbor in February 2002.
The Veterans Memorial Flags will be put up in BluffView Cemetery Saturday, May 24, at 1:15 p.m., weather permitting. Volunteers are welcome to assist in this endeavor.
