Nelson, Wilson graduate Sunday

Nelson, Wilson graduate Sunday Augustana College's 143rd Commencement Service begins at noon on Sunday, May 25, at the Sioux Falls Arena. Doors open at 11 a.m.

A total of 370 students will participate in the ceremonies. Degrees to be awarded include 368 bachelor's degrees and two master's degrees.

Local graduates are Rachel Nelson, who will receive a bachelor of arts in biology, and Walter Wilson, who will graduate magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in government/international affairs. Both Nelson and Wilson are from Vermillion.

Dr. Charles Balcer of Sioux Falls, Augustana's 16th president, will deliver the commencement address. Dr. Balcer and his wife, Elizabeth, will receive honorary degrees. Dr. Balcer served as president of Augustana from 1965 to 1980. The Balcers have maintained close ties with the college over the years in terms of service and support.

David Solberg, who was elected to the Augustana College Board of Regents in 1990, and his wife, Sandra, will receive the Friends of Augustana Award. David Solberg's tenure with the Board of Regents included two years as chairman.

Baccalaureate services begin at 9 a.m. in the Elmen Center. Campus pastor Paul Rohde is the preacher. Doors open at 8 a.m.

Augustana is a liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
