Nielsens are 'pillars' of Wakonda golf by Ashley Anderson Where will one find the Nielsen family in the spring, summer, and fall? That's right, on the golf course.
Father, Jim Nielsen, was very instrumental in starting the golf program at Wakonda four years ago. Since that time, all three of his children have played for him at WHS. Brett Nielsen graduated two years ago as a great golfer and now his sister Kayla and brother Alex have taken over the reins.
The weather has been decent and cooperative for Wakonda golf members this year. So far there have been seven meets and a lot of first places.
For the girls' team, Kayla Nielsen has taken her share of placing during her so far excellent senior career. First, on April 3, at Fox Run in Yankton, Kayla took third place, then on April 14 at Glenridge in Irene, Kayla took second. At Glenridge on April 17, Nielsen brought home a first place. Nielsen says she believes that she is farther along at this point in the season than she was last year.
Other results from the April 17 meet were Brittany Rederick taking first in the junior varsity division, and nipping at her heals was Ashley Anderson with a second place finish there.
On April 22 at Freeman Public Golf Course, Kayla Nielsen placed first. Then again at Glenridge on April 25, Kayla placed third and Ashley Anderson, fifth. April 28 at one of the larger tournaments of the year up in West Central, Kayla was once again in one of her top three finishes as she placed third.
At the April 3 meet in Yankton, sophomore Alex Nielsen brought home second place, and on April 11 at the first meet in Freeman, Alex Nielsen took fourth. April 14, Nielsen won the tournament up at Glenridge. He also took first on April 17 with teammate Matt Jorgensen placing just behind him in second. At the same meet Andy Ganschow placed fourth in the junior varsity competition. The Wakonda varsity team took home the first place plaque. Alex Nielsen placed fifth, while Matt Jorgensen took ninth on April 22 at Freeman's Valley View Golf Course. And on April 25 at Glenridge, Nielsen placed second in the varsity competition, and Andy Ganschow placed fourth with his teammate, Patrick Morrison placing fifth. Up at West Central on April 28, Alex Nielsen placed 11th in the tournament.
