Tanager tennis ends season at state tourney by Jim Prosser The Tanager boys' tennis team completed its season as it played its last matches at the South Dakota State High School Tournament in Sioux Falls May 15-17.

First round singles: Flight 1 � Jason Holoch (V) def Rory Fox (Watertown) 6-3, 6-3; flight 2 � Geng Wang (V) def Chad Carmen (Madison) 6-4, 6-4; flight 3 � Nathan Scheidel (V) lost to Brent Bouzek (Sturgis) 3-6, 5-7; flight 4 � Jack Higgins (V) lost to Pete Sveeen (Ab Cent) 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3-7); flight 5 � Steve Foltz (V) lost to David Nothdurtt (SFL) 1-6, 2-6; flight 6 � Keslav Arogyaswamy (V) def Abram Holm (St Thomas M) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

First round doubles: Flight 1 � Holoch/Wang (V) def Milbank 6-3, 6-3; flight 2 � Scheidel/Higgins (V) def Madison 6-0, 6-4; flight 3 – Foltz/Dan Day (V) lost to Brandon Valley 1-6, 1-6.

Championship bracket second round singles: Flight 1 � Joe Ekert (SFR) def Holoch (V) 6-1, 6-0; flight 2 � Michael Elson (SFO) def Wang (V) 6-1, 6-2; flight 3 � Scheidel (V) def Cosmo Saunders (Y) 10-5; Flight 4 � Higgins (V) def Mike Keegan (St. Thomas M) 10-1; flight 5 � Foltz (V) def Zack Lambrects (Mil) 10-6; flight 6 � Tom Freeham (RCS) def Arogyaswamy (V) 6-0, 6-1.

Remaining rounds were in the consolation bracket. Singles: Flight 3 � Bill Gisi (Ab R) def Scheidel (V), 10-3; flight 4 � Higgins (V) lost to Charlie Timm (Wat) 10-4; flight � 5 Josh Herr (BV) def Foltz (V), 11-10 (9-7).

Second round doubles: Flight 1 � Holoch/Wang (V) lost to SFL 6-3, 6-2; flight 2 � RC Central def Scheidel/Higgins (V) 6-0, 6-0; flight 3 � Foltz/Day (V) lost to St. Thomas More 10-7.

"Our team finished with 142 total points at State, more than 50 above our score last year, and finished in 12th," said coach Nick Hovden. "Our performance gave that little extra motivation to the kids, going into next season.

"If the team members play a little during the off season, we should be ready for a great season next year. We had a fun season and the kids got along great and had good times," he said. "We were so close to having a great season. A few games won, here and there, and we would have had a better record. But, that's the way it goes! And we'll be ready for next season."
