USD's Hoffman wins NCC heptathlon Sarah Hoffman and Brianne Vette of The University of South Dakota women's track and field team finished first and second, respectively, at the North Central Conference Multi-Event Competition on April 28-29 at Fargo, ND.
Hoffman, a junior from Mitchell, finished with 4,767 points, edging out Vette, a junior from Spearfish, who had 4,733 points. USD's Kayla Todnem, a freshman from St. James, MN, finished 14th.
As a result of the performances by Hoffman and Vette, USD scored 18 points for the NCC meet May 9-10 in Fargo, ND. Heading into the NCC meet, team points will be as follows: South Dakota, 18; Nebraska-Omaha, 9; Northern Colorado, 6; Augustana, 3; North Dakota State, 2; and Minnesota State-Mankato, 1.
Ranked sixth nationally in the heptathlon, Hoffman had a solid second day (April 29), finishing second in the javelin throw (101'05); fourth in the 800-meter run (2:25.14), and seventh in the long jump (16'09.25).
On day one, Hoffman, who was fourth in the conference indoor pentathlon, won the 100-meter hurdles (14.61); finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.39); fourth in the high jump (5'04.25); and seventh in the shot put (31'04.75).
Vette, who is ranked fourth in the nation in the heptathlon, also had a strong second day. She was second in the 800-meter run (2:24.91); fourth in the long jump (17'0), and sixth in the javelin throw (92'08). On day one of the heptathlon, Vette won the shot put (36'05.50); finished second in the 200-meter dash (26.14); sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.33); and sixth in the high jump (5'04.25).
Todnem's day-two totals included long jump, 13th, (15'03.5); javelin, 14th, (63'06); and 800-meter run, 11th, (2:44.50). On day one, Todnem was 12th in the 100-meter hurdles (16:47); 14th in the 200-meter dash (28.24); 14th in the high jump (4'04.25) and 16th in the shot put (24'01.75).
Both the South Dakota men's and women's track and field teams will participate in the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, in Sioux Falls.
