842nd Engineer Company deploys overseas The South Dakota Army National Guard now has six units deployed to Southwest Asia.

The 842nd Engineer Company of Spearfish, Belle Fourche and Sturgis, departed Fort Carson, CO, early Tuesday morning, June 3, for an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia.

The 842nd is the South Dakota National Guard's premier horizontal construction company. Its mission is to provide heavy equipment support such as road building and construction airfields. The unit is equipped with 20-ton dump trucks, loaders, scrapers, crane, and road grader.

Status of units overseas

The 109th Engineer Battalion of Sturgis departed Fort Carson, CO, on Feb. 16. They are currently located at Tallil Airbase in Iraq and serving as the command and control headquarters for two engineer companies, a fire fighter unit, a well diggers unit, and a dump truck detachment. Current projects include repairing road, preparing for a site for water purification unit, hauling gravel fill, and grading various road networks.

Unit members from the 200th Engineer Company of Pierre, Chamberlain, Mobridge and Lemmon, departed Fort Leonard Wood, MO, on April 5. They are located in Iraq where they completed a 300-meter bridge the first week on site. The unit is currently maintaining the bridge operations, pulling security on bridge sites, and conducting minor haul projects.

The 727th Transportation Company of Elk Point, Brookings, and Watertown, departed Fort Carson, CO, on April 5. They are currently supporting the Marines with various haul missions in and out of Iraq and Kuwait. To date, the unit has logged approximately 250,000 miles.

Company B, 109th Medical Battalion of Vermillion, departed Fort McCoy, WI, on April 6. They are in Kuwait supporting various medical missions.

The 740th Transportation Company of Milbank, and Brookings departed Fort Carson, CO, on April 19. The unit's primary mission has been hauling subsistence items to Iraq in support of U.S. troops.

Status of other activated South Dakota Army

National Guard units

129th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment of Rapid City, is at Fort Riley, KS, and is supporting the post public affairs office.

Detachment 3, 665th Maintenance Company of Sioux Falls, is at Fort Sill, OK, and is supporting the 3rd Corps Artillery.

Three members, of the 1st Battalion, 196th Regiment of Fort Meade, are at Fort Bragg, NC, instructing MLRS classes.

235th Military Police Company of Custer and Rapid City, is at Fort Carson, CO, serving as the security force for Fort Carson.

665th Maintenance Company of Mitchell and Rapid City, is at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, augmenting security forces.

1742nd Transportation Company of Sioux Falls and Flandreau, is at Fort Carson, CO, and is awaiting further orders for assignment.

South Dakota Air National Guard Status

Total activated: 132; overseas: 72 in six countries; United States: 60. All F-16's have returned to Joe Foss Field.
