Babe Ruth League teams open with 13-12 ‘screamer’

Babe Ruth League teams open with 13-12 'screamer' by Jim Prosser This will be the first game results between two members in the Vermillion/Yankton Babe Ruth League. Since the Teeners don't have a Vermillion team this summer, the younger players of the First National Bank (Vermillion) and the Vermillion Parks & Rec teams played at Prentis Park on Tuesday, June 3.

The first game of the season was an exciting extra inning 13-12 screamer for FNB over VP&R. Winning pitcher was Jordan Merrigan who, by going 2/3 of an inning and stopping the five-run surge in the top of the eighth by the VP&R, became the winner.

The game had VP&R ahead, after 5 1/2, 7-5; FNB tied it with two runs to force the extra innings. When VP&R scored 5 in the eighth, things looked pretty bleak for FNB, but they responded with a six-run explosion of their own and captured the victory.

Pitchers for the teams were: VP&R Tim Bleil (four in, six Ks, one BB, one hit); Zach Weiss (one in, three Ks, two BB, two hits); and losing pitcher Ryan Gilbertson (three in, two Ks, seven BB, five hits). FNP (V) Alex Schaack (four in, eight Ks, four BB, no hits); Jordan Boots (3 1/3 in, three Ks, seven hits); and winning pitcher Merrigan (one K, one BB, no hits).

Hitting leaders for FNB (V) were: Gabe Verbeski double and single; Alex Schaack, two singles; and Boots with a double; Matt Stange, Alex Anderson-Kahl, and Tyler Thedorff each had a single.

VP&R hitting: Gilbertson with a homer; Eric McPherson (double and single); Stuart Enos, Paul Hammon, Michael Van Dyke and Dan Storm each had a single.

Line score: VP&R 12 runs, 7 hits, 4 errors; FNB(V) 13 runs, 8 hits, 5 errors.
