Letters Readership's input would be appreciated
To the editor:
We are writing to ask the help and insights of your readership on an idea we have been working on for the last six months.
We would like to know whether the citizens of South Dakota would be interested in perusing legislation to extend in-state residency to the grandchildren of current South Dakota residents for the purpose of attending South Dakota institutions of higher education.
This would be an excellent way to help balance the trend of out-migration of youth to out-of-state schools while at the same time focusing on bringing back to our state students who already have strong ties here. This would allow grandchildren to spend four years close to their grandparents. We also believe that we would have a good opportunity to keep many of the kids here after they graduate.
There obviously would be some expense associated with this proposal, but we believe the benefits would far outweigh the costs. Their parents would be more inclined to visit South Dakota since both their parents and children would be in the same place. Moreover, the money they spend would help offset some to the expenses to the state.
We would greatly appreciate people's input on this idea. We can be contacted at the e-mail addresses below.
